Archaeological research of Zheti ata street

Abstract

Abstract. The main streets of the late medieval Old Turkestan get their name from the gates of Zhetiata, Darbaza Musalla, Ikan and Takiya. Many small streets branch off from these streets, forming a complex and extensive street network. In 2020, in order to partially restore the facilities along Zhetiata Main Street, excavations were carried out on the east side of the street, and the layout and structure of residential areas were determined. Based on a comprehensive ceramic analysis, it was found that the undiscovered horizons of the building belong to the XVIII-XIX centuries. As a result of archaeological research, data were obtained on residential areas located along the streets inside the city buildings, residential buildings have a closed courtyard and differ in their original structure. In addition, it was found that the residential buildings consist of several rooms with an inner courtyard. During the excavations, many foci were found, bordered by ceramics at the edges, oval or rounded in front. Such open-type fireplaces, which were used both for home heating and for cooking, were common in medieval buildings in southern Kazakhstan and Central Asia.
